It has been a hot June! The first few days were a little overcast, but then the summer soon settled in. Then we had Football, the Jubilee and Strikes! I was surprised how patriotic British people became during the Queens Jubilee and then the football. Early one morning a group arrived, grabbed sun beds and beers and then asked where the TV for the match against Brazil  was going to be! - You should have seen their faces when I told them I did not have a TV! They soon shot off to Ipsos! Those that stayed on football mornings enjoyed a quiet beach and regular updates from me care of the BBC website!

Air traffic strikes in France and Spain cause some to stay longer! Ferry Strikes lasting five days caused some to have to stay even longer!

The road down to Agni bay was closed for four days at the end of June - it has been resurfaced! One may ask why it was not completed during the winter months - when the road is not in use! The tarmac only sets in the heat - there is no way we can do this during the winter - was the reply!  What do they do in the UK I ask? Some may be distressed to hear that the road to Agni is has been improved. Ray - do not worry - the work is of poor standard - even you would approve!

We now have a new boat taxi captain - Captain Spiros! Captain Lucas could not take the stress! Our new captain is great fun and very likeable. He collects each evening  from St Stephanos (at 7pm - 6 Euro per person return) and Kalami (at 7.45pm with out charge).  Each evening it is being very well supported as it is now by reservation only.  Now that the evenings are so warm it is truly a magical and very romantic trip.

Talking of romantic, we had a small wedding during June - to be precise, a reception. The young couple - Peter and Kelley were married in Corfu town and then after a yacht trip to Agni bay held a small reception of ten close family members. (No they did not have to sit the whole time on the jetty!)

Well with it being so busy, even I am amazed that I have found time to write the newsletters. Actually I tend to write a few words a day - rather than leaving it until the last moment!

The new network is fine, but to be honest I have not found many chatters! Most regulars are simply enjoying their evening here too much and by the time a few join the chat room they have consumed far too much alcohol! Regular chatter JP and his wife were here during June and they celebrated their anniversary and a birthday. What a nice couple they are - it was strange though having known JP from the chat room for many months and now meeting him in person.

I came under fire during the month (via the notice board) for making the Taverna too busy! Technology seemed to be to blame - or this website.

Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. July newsletter. The next day, I took this wonderful shot of an older couple both using their mobile phones to 'text' home! - Surely it is not just me - incidentally Ray - I hate mobile phones and do not even own one!

June Report

I am adding to the website a report about each of the summer months. This will offer you an informed choice concerning the ideal time to visit Corfu. The following is based on my nine years of living in Corfu:

Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. July newsletter.

The first two weeks of June see Corfu at its best. Beaches and Tavernas filling up but not crowded. Beautiful warm days with temperatures reaching mid 20's - not too hot. Warm evenings enabling a good night's sleep - a jumper may even be needed late at night - especially if you plan to use the evening water-taxis.

The sea is now 'warming up' making swimming not such a fresh experience as found in may! Allow though for one cloudy (or even rainy) day per week.

The second two weeks of June become a little busier and hotter. The weather is now settled and day temps of low 30's with warm evenings. Beaches now quite busy - especially weekends with locals. The Tavernas are now  buzzing. (You will need to book at Taverna Agni to be able to eat during the evening.)

The sea is now warm. Expect no rain (but is may be possible as averages suggest one day of rain during the last two weeks! - but this will be warm rain!) Welcome afternoon breezes created by the difference in temperatures between  the land and the sea, help cool things down after a hot day. These can sometimes create a swell - stopping the evening boat-taxis. The breeze often drops by 8-9pm.

Of note: Half-term school holidays will have a great effect on the number of people making anyone of the above described weeks busier - choose you holiday carefully ray!

Staff Report

This months report is about Alex - our daytime waiter.

Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. July newsletter.

Alex is 23, and has worked for us for four years now. He missed two years while he was in the army - compulsory Greek national service. His parents own and run the Kafeneon at Kendroma (opposite the really bad bend!)

During the winter months - when the Taverna is closed he works with Theo up at Porta - where they have a quarry.

The stone they quarry is used for the dry stone style walls which have become extremely fashionable for the exclusive villas in the area.

These are the latest pictures of our new villa that is rented with CV travel. The villa is located in the quiet village of Loustri - just above Agni bay, and has four bedrooms - sleeping 4-8 - fully air-conditioned. There are two bathrooms, a fully fitted kitchen - what else would you expect from Eleni! - with dishwasher and washing machine. The villa is on two separate levels - with two bedrooms and one bathroom on each level - Ideal for two families or a large family with teenagers - who want to be a little bit separate from the parents (or is it parents separate from the teenagers?). A maid cleans daily.
