A bank holiday, the 15th August is the feast of the Assuption of the Virgin Mary and the island comes to a standstill as it is one of the most revered festivals in Greece. Many of the villages have a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and special services are held in each of them. This day is also the name day for anyone called Maria, Marios, Panagiotis or Panagiota and it is traditional to wish them 'Chronia polla'.
