Feast day of the Virgin Mary

A bank holiday, the 15th August is the feast of the Assuption of the Virgin Mary and the island comes to a standstill as it is one of the most revered festivals in Greece. Many of the villages have a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and special services are held in each of them. This day is also the name day for anyone called Maria, Marios, Panagiotis or Panagiota and it is traditional to wish them 'Chronia polla'.

Chuch of the Vigin Mary Markopoulo

Every August just before the religious festival of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) many small harmless snakes appear all around the church. They are considered a prophesy of good luck. The snakes disappear on the day of the festival after they have visited inside the church and have climbed all over the icons.

Aghia Efimia Feastday

The feast day of Saint Efimia takes place on 11th July at the church of Aghia Efimia. After the evening church servie on the 10th July a village barbecue is held with dancing.

Saint Spyridon

Saint Spyridon has his feastday on the 1st October. The church of Saint Spyridon is in the Lithostroto in Argostoli and after the evening service there is a procession which goes all the way to the church of the Virgin Mary of Drapanon which is near the cemetary over Drapeno bridge.

Robolla Wine Festival

On the first Saturday after the 15th August the annual wine festival takes place at the village of Frangata near Saint Gerrasimos monastery in the Omala plain.

Union of the Ionian Islands

On the 21st of May 1864, the Ionian Islands were reunited with the rest of Greece. This historical turning point is celebrated and commemorated with parades and a bank holiday.

International Music Festival of Argostoli

This very popular music festival takes place in the capital of Kefalonia at the end of August. It presents various Greek and international artists performing instruments in different parts of the town.

Feast of Panagia Agrilia

In Sami, there is an annual celbration of the feast of the Virgin Agrilia which takes place on 23rd August. A religious ceremony is held in the monastery of Panagia Agrilion, followed by a bbq and traditional music and dancing.

Theatrical Festival

A presentation of various theatrical plays performed by Greek theatrical troupes is organised on July the 15th in the town of Argostoli, the capital of the island.
