Saint Gerassimos Monastery

Situated in the Omala valley, the Monastery is dedicated to the island's patron saint and is the most important womanly Monastery on the island. Saint Gerasimos (1506-1579) came from the aristocratic and wealthy Notaras family.
Saint Gerassimos has more than one feastday.

Twice a year - on the 15th and 16th August and on the 19th and 20th of October, there is a two-day market in the grounds of Saint Gerassimos monastery.
The market is the busiest in mid-August as the island is full to bursting point with tourists and pilgrims visiting the island to pay their respects to the saint. If accommodation is not booked well in advance it is virtualy impossible to find a bed on the island and many people sleep in the open air under the trees in the grounds of the monastery.

In October there are far fewer people attending the procession and the market is more low key.

An all night vigil is held on the 15th August and on the morning of the 16th there is a church service and procession. The choir of Kefalonia usually attend the church servie. Then the congregation patiently form a queue to pay their respects to their saint.

Here the silver sarcophagus is placed 'standing up' so that pilgrims may kiss the saint's feet. The casket is usually in the horizontal position when lying in its place in the small church next door.

When all the pilgrims have visited the saint in the large new church of Saint Gerassimos, the casket is taken carefully back to the small church until the next procession. Locals crowd around to get a last look at their saint before the outer sarcophagus door is locked by the Papas.
