Aghia Efimia

There are no large or luxury class hotels in Aghia Efimia. The hotels here are smaller and family run. There is a selection of self-catering studios and apartments and a sprinkling of recently built luxury villas with privacy and their own swimming pools.

Antipata

Antipata is a small village on the main road leading into Fiscardo which is 5 minutes away by car. The local church has an unusual construction.

Argostoli

Tour operators tend not to offer packages to Argostoli which attracts independent travellers and business people. Four hotels on the main square range from A to C class and there are hotels to choose from along the harbour front and in the side streets of the capital town. There are also some studios and apartments for rent which are more difficult to find and some basic rooms which you will find if you wander around the streets looking for signs.

Aghia Kyriaki

Aghia Kyriaki is a bay to the south of the more famous Myrtos Bay reached by road from either Angona or Zola villages. An ideal retreat for a relaxed holiday with car hire recommended.

Assos

As Assos is a village of 100 inhabitants you will not find any large hotels and space, generally, is at a premium. The essence of the village is its unrivalled beauty and the combination of history and architecture mixed with local fishing boats and visiting sailing flotillas side by side under imposing castle walls on its own peninsula. Accommodation ranges from simple Pension rooms with a fridge to a few detached villas with pools. There are also apartments and maisonettes built on multi-levels to follow the contours of the hillsides and you are advised to book well in advance.

Avithos

Accommodation in Avithos starts virtually on the Avithos coastline facing Dias island and is sprinkled through the rural groves and orchards to the village of Svoronata. Accommodation ranges from apartments and studios with swimming pool to A class apartment-hotel and is available through tour operators as well as for independent travellers.

Camping in Kefalonia

Camping is strictly forbidden on the beaches and in the forests of Kefalonia. There are two campsites which are situated near the beginning and end of the famous geological water phenomenom of Kefalonia - and they each have a beach nearby.

Dendrinata

A few kms along the road from Aghia Efimia on the way to Myrtos Beach you will find the villages of Dendrinata and Makriotika the centre of the island. These villages make a good base for a holiday with a car combining traditional Greek life with the delights of Myrtos which is about 10 mins' drive away. Villas available through specialist operators.

Fanari

The coastal road from Lassi to Argostoli starts at Kalamia beach and meanders for about 7 kms around the tip of the Lassi peninsula with its landmark lighthouse. Along this scenic route are three hotels with pools and a selection of studios and apartments in a rural setting of pine forests and small coves.

Fiscardo

A prestigious area for holidays, Fiscardo offers a choice of luxury suites, A-class hotel accommodation, private villas, apartments and studios. You will also find a good choice of luxury villas with private pools in the outlying villages such as Evreti and Tselentata.

Karavados

Karavados is the village above Saint Thomas beach. It is a pretty village with well kept houses and lovely churches. There is one large B class hotel, the Karavados Beach Hotel and there are some studios a stone's throw from the beach. In and around the village there are some apartments with swimming pool and for larger parties there are also villas for rent.

Katelios

Accommodation by the beach at Katelios is in Kato Katelios and the village of Katelios spreads out above the coastline. There is a mixture of self-catering studios and apartments and some newly built large luxury villas with private pools and an unusual boutique hotel.

Lakithra Kourkoumelata and Metaxata

Lakythra is a traditionally Greek village with a bakery, kafeneion, some tavernas and a few pretty churches. High in the hills above the Kato Livatho area there are spectacular panoramic rural and coastal views which inspired Lord Byron during his stay in Metaxata. With a hire car, the south-west beaches from Lassi to Lourdas are all easily accessible and there are a couple of small, family run hotels and some self-catering apartments and villas to be found.

Lassi

Lassi was one of the first resorts to receive the influx of tourists brought by Thomson Holidays around 25 years ago and the resort developed due to its wonderful sandy beaches and proximity to the island's capital Argostoli. There is a wide range of accommodation with a distinct shortage of villas with pools. There are quite a few older studios with basic cooking facilities some of which are on offer through tour operators and some are now selling direct. There are A class hotels above the beaches of Makris Yialos and Platis Yialos and some recent hotels have been and are being built. There are stunning views from the apartment complexes positioned high up on the hillsides. These accommodations tend to need a taxi transfer and car hire is recommended.

Lixouri Petani and the Pali Peninsula

Lixouri is famous for its A-class hotel on Xi beach and has a selection of self-catering apartments dotted across the peninsula. A lesser known beach on the north of the Pali Peninsula offers some self-catering accommodation right by the beach and some newly built apartments with swimming pool high above the beach with wonderful views.
A recent addition is the 600-bed all inclusive hotel 6 kms from Lixouri.

Lourdas Lithero and Vlahata

A popular resort, Lourdas has a lot of self-catering accommodation from studios, apartment complexes and luxury villas and pools on offer. Hotel accommodation is in a couple of small family-run units. The accommodation is spread out along the long and winding road which starts at Vlahata village on the main Argostoli road and zig-zags via the village of Lourdata down to the beach. Lithero is the sandy strip running from Lourdas to Trapezaki and you will find some self-catering apartments and pool in the area.

Manganos

The village of Manganos is a traditional small village en route to Fiscardo just 5 kms away. It is also the cross-roads for the beach road to the North West coast beaches of Alaties and Ai Jerusalem. Manganos is part of a circular route to Fiscardo going via Antipata with Emblissi beach nearby one way or via Foki bay the other.

Mavrata

The rural village of Mavrata famous for its vineyards provides a secluded and peaceful location for a relaxing holiday a few kilometres away from the seaside village of Katelios.

Mitakata

This tiny village nestling in the Omala valley of Robolla vineyards in the Livatho area of Kefalonia not far from Saint George's Castle, offers accommodation in a natural retreat for those seeking a different perspective on Kefalonia.

Mounda and Ratzakli

Near the beach and above the beach at Mounda there is a small selection of apartments and hotel-apartments. The sandy beaches of Mounda, Potamakia and Kaminia are protected for the loggerhead turtles. Ratzakli is a village perched above these beaches where you will find some self-catering accommodation which is best combiend with car hire as the village is equidistant from Katelios and Skala resorts.

Poros

The port of Poros offers accommodation in studios, apartments and small family run hotels. It tends to attract independent travellers as it is not featured in any of the British tour operator brochures. Be prepared to telephone to make your holiday reservation as many of the owners do not operate using the internet.

Sami

Sami is the second largest port on Kefalonia, after Argostoli. It still has a 'pre-ketchup' Greek flavour and offers accommodation in some older B and C hotels which are convenient for the harbour. A litte drive out of town there are some larger hotels with swimming pools. You can find studios for independent renting in and around Sami. There are lovely views over to Ithaca and it is a good base for visiting Melisani and Drogarati. The flat terrain and local interest attracts Dutch cyclists who have a holiday base there.

Sarlata

The small and sleepy village of Sarlata has a mini-market and a kafeneion. Its population swells in the summer months as there is a high proportion of rooms to rent considering the size of the village. You can find simple rooms in older buildings as well as luxury 3-bedroomed villas with their own pool. Accommodation is available direct and through some tour operators. Sarlata is popular as it is an easy transfer from the airport and the beaches of Ammes, Ai Helii and Avithos are a few minutes' drive away.

Skala

The resort of Skala has stretched along the coastline from the pine-tree fringed Skala beach a few kilometres along the coastline towards Poros. Along the coastline you will find newly built hotel and self-catering complexes on offer from the more popular tour operators. There are also some large luxury villas with swimming pools to be found. In the village of Skala there are still some older rooms for rent which are available for independent travellers to book direct.

Spartia

For accommodation in Spartia, Cape Liakas, Kleismata, Korianna, Keramies, Koundourata and Pessada, there is a varied choice from studios to luxury villas and hotels. Spartia and the surrounding villages usually need car hire to complement the holiday due to the lay of the land. Tour operators offer a selection of holidays usually with car included and there are many rooms on offer direct.

Svoronata

The village of Svoronata has a range of accommodated sprinkled along its rural lanes. You can find anything from simple studios to newly built A-class apartment-hotel accommodation as well as modern villas with their own pools and a traditional B-class hotel near Pelagia bay.

Trapezaki

One of the newer resorts of Kefalonia which means most of the accommodation has been built in the last five years. Apart from the one hotel overlooking Trapezaki Bay, the accommodation is in small blocks of studios and apartments and some large luxury villas.

Vassilikades and nearby villages

Including Kothreas, Konidarata and Mesovunia. Vassilikades is about mid-way between Assos and Fiscardo and this rural area of the Errisos peninsula offers a selection of studios, apartments and villas to rent. Vassilikades has a taverna, pizzeria, pharmacy, small supermarket and a garage. Mid-way between Assos and Vassilikades lies Kothreas village with some self-catering studios with stunning coastal views. Konidarata is the next village along from Vassilikades and has a local supermarket and some studios for rent. Covering the slopes of the nearby hills is Mesovunia which offers some simple studios for those interested in agro-tourism.
