The first of the two castles on Kefalonia was built 8 kms south of Argostoli and its beginnings date back to 394 AD when Kefalonia was part of the vast Roman Empire and was under the rule of Arcadios at a time when fleets of pirates ravaged the island's coasts and ransacked the towns and villages.
It was named after the church of Saint George which once stood on top of the hill. The history of the castle of Assos began in 1584 when the rocky promontory of Assos was selected as the naturally impregnable location for the island's second and largest castle.
