Part of the charm of Assos lies in its simplicity. The rustic village, of about a 100 inhabitants, contains some fine examples of Venetian architecture commonly found on Kefalonia before the 1953 earthquake.
The romantic, picturesque village of Assos appears as if it's been stuck in time. Certainly the place to while away the day and do nothing other than perhaps sample the local wine, taste the fresh fish caught that morning and just soak up the peacefulness that Assos offers.
Situated 7 km north of Sami on the east coast, Aghia Efimia is a very pretty fishing village with a well sheltered harbour.
This quiet and quaint picturesque town, has captivating views of the island of Ithaka and is a very popular place to relax and unwind, while watching the world go by.
The capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli, is ideally situated for visiting all that Kefalonia has to offer as well as offering plenty of choice for shopping and dining. The bustling port is a focal point with fishing caiques, ferries, cruise boats and private yachts all competing for space in the harbour. A place where you can blend in with the loals.
The village of Antipata is just five minutes drive from Fiscardo where you will find a choice of tavernas, a lovely secluded beach and an interesting church.
Avithos is a rural area where olive trees and citrus orchards abound. The long sandy beaches of Avithos and Megalipetra are divided by a rocky outcrop, with the whole coastline facing the tiny island of Dias with views over to Zakynthos on a clear day.
Dendrinata, Makriotika, Divarata - these are some of the villages in the 'wind tunnel' between the mountains of Kalon and Dynati, where the goats have gold teeth and there are still remains of the old windmills.
Evreti is a small hamlet south of Fiscardo by the north east coast of Kefalonia. It takes about ten minutes to drive from Fiscardo to Evreti which is a rural village offering tremendous views across to Ithaca.
Although the 1953 earthquake destroyed much of the Ionian islands, on the northernmost tip of Kefalonia, the village of Fiscardo stayed almost intact. With foresight the island's governors issued strict building regulations to maintain the elegance of the Venetian architecture which lines Fiscardo's deep horseshoe harbour. Sometimes described as a sleepy fishing village, Fiscardo becomes a bustling harbour where small sailing boats, motor boats, cruisers, yachts, fishing caiques and ferries all compete for space along the quayside.
Kato Katelios is a seaside village with a sand and shingle beach and is 24 km from the island's capital of Argostoli. From Katelios you may hire a small motor boat for exploring beaches such as Koroni and other more inaccessible beaches.
Lassi as a resort has developed due to its amazing beaches of golden sand. The two main beaches are Makris Yialos (Greek for 'long sandy beach') and Platis Yialos (wide sandy beach). The beach shelves gently into beautifully clear and clean waters providing a safe haven for children. The beaches are accessed at various points by steps or slopes and these are well sign-posted from the lanes that run parallel to the main road which runs from Lassi into Argostoli.
There is much to seen on this peninsular, with many fine beaches and attractive views and villages. This is where you will find Lixouri and with over 4000 residents, is the second largest town on the island of Kefalonia and is the capital of the Pali peninsula which is often called the Lixouri peninsula. When people refer to Lixouri they may mean the town or the area in general.
Lourdas Bay is one of the largest bays of Kefalonia and is fringed by over two miles of sand and pebble beach and ever-changing turquoise blue clear water. Although a small resort, Lourdas has a quiet community feel about it, with superb beaches, good restaurants and tavernas, it's good for all the family. It is also a wonderful place for walkers and hikers.
The rural village of Mavrata is in the south of the island 4kms from the coastal village of Katelios, with its sand and shingle beach and 24 km from the island's capital of Argostoli. The picturesque settlement stands inside wild vegetation, under the imposing mountain of Enos and is famous for it's wine.
Pessada is a rural area of residential property and some villas for summer rental. It's just under 11 kms from the capital Argostoli and 9kms from Argostoli airport. The port of Pessada has a daily ferry service to Skinari on Zakynthos.
Petani is a sweeping horseshoe bay, with bright white pebbles and limestone outcrops, tumbling into an aquamarine sea. A tangle of olive groves surround the beach from behind. A truly beautiful spot and one of the most spectacular beaches in Kefalonia is to be found at Petani on the Lixouri peninsula.
This quiet and quaint picturesque town of Poros is very popular with the yachting flotillas that appear regularly throughout the summer. With captivating views of the island of Ithaka and watching the sun go down, is a good reason to relax and unwind in Poros.
The port-town of Poros provides a significant link with its daily ferry service between Kefalonia and mainland Greece.
Sami is the second busiest port on Kefalonia with ferries serving other island. It is a very charming working town with it's harbour long waterfront, lined with restaurants and tavernas offering a fine selection of foods. Sami dates back to the prehistoric period. Homer described Sami as part of the kingdom of Ulysses, the leader of Cephallenes.
The small and isolated settlement of Sarlata, only 10 mins drive from the Capital of Kefalonia, stands on a hillside and is ideal to enjoy the quiet and relax in this very calm and peaceful area.
Sarlata has all the rural unspoilt ambience which is so attractive in the villages of the Livatho region and is a good base from which to visit the rest of Kefalonia.
Skala is set on a very long golden sandy beach on the southernmost tip of the island, 37 km from the island's capital and is the most renowned beach resort of Kefalonia.
The busy resort of Skala has everything to offer, apart from it's excellent long sandy beach - water sports, scuba diving, gift shops, numerous bars, tavernas and restaurants, offering value for money and something for everyone.
Spartia is a small village in the Livatho region a few miles south east of the airport. The sunny bay of Spartia faces south and is sheltered from the predominant north west winds.
The small beach of rock and sand is an ideal place for quiet relaxation.
The village of Svoronata is a ten minute drive from the airport and unlike some areas on Kefalonia the terrain is fairly flat which makes it an excellent choice for those who enjoy easy walking.
From Argostoli, 30 mins drive along the south coast brings you to the area of Trapezaki. The sandy coves are to be found before the long sandy stretch of beach at Lourdas.
Vassilikades is a charming traditional village about half way between Fiscardo and Myrtos Beach. It is not a summer resort but a working village which is open throughout the season.
