KATELIOS

Kato Katelios is a seaside village with a sand and shingle beach and is 32 km from the island's capital of Argostoli. Katelios is famous for its fresh fish tavernas and if you like fishing, you can catch your own! This rural setting is a paradise for lovers of nature so if you enjoy walking, discovering rare plants and birds, then bring some comfortable shoes and follow the local footpaths.

There is much of interest to explore locally - from the local wine estate in Mavrata famous for its Robolla, the Sissia Monastery and church of the Virgin of the Snakes, which are all fairly local.

The location of Katelios is very un-commercialised, the largest number of visitors being the loggerhead turtles. If you are interested in the protection of the caretta caretta turtles, who love the sandy beaches in the area, take a visit to the Katelios Environmental group, who have set up a small museum and information centre. The local bus service runs from Katelios to Skala and along the coastal road to Poros or in the other direction to Argostoli. Car hire recommended.

Ag. Varvara, or Ag. Barbara Beach is a beautiful sand and pebble beach 200m long and 15-20metres wide. Nearby, eucalyptus. pine trees and rose-bay bushes add to the s tranquil beauty of the beach. The beach is accessible by foot, car and bicycle. More information from the municipal website

Seabreeze Motorboats are based in the small harbour of Katelios just past the kiosk offering a great way to explore the local secluded beaches.

Yiannis' suggested itineraries include from Katelios west to Lourdas and Trapezaki, but some of the more secluded beaches en route such as Koroni are probably better for first-timers, being nearer and more secluded. Cruising eastwards from Katelios towards Skala, takes you past Kaminia and around Cape Mounda where there are some lovely sandy beaches to be found.

Sea Kayaking Kefalonia operates sea kayaking trips from Lourdas to Katelios which is a paddling distance of 7 nautical miles. In good weather conditions it is an easy to moderate trip taking about six hours. Starting at the long sandy beach of Lourdas, the trip covers a remote and beautiful stretch of Kefalonia's south coastline.

Sandstone cliffs, numerous sandy beaches only accessible by sea and rock gardens are along the way. After a visit to some sea caves, you will arrive at the beautiful beach of Koroni. Fine sand and crystal clear waters make Koroni an ideal stop for swimming and lunch. The day finishes at Katelios with a transfer back to Lourdas if required.

Dreams is set back from the beach at Ag. Barbara beach in Katelios. Run by English and Greek couple you will be sure to get a good cup of tea and excellent snacks at the Dreams.

The sea slopes very gently at Katelios and the rocks and rock pools, provide endless entertainment for children.

There are 3 car hire rental offices and a local taxi rank by the kiosk.

Water taxi service runs three times a day from Katelios to beaches of Skala and Poros (and return).

Whether you want a beachside snack or a full lobster meal there is a great choice of places to eat in Katelios. In the Ag Barbara beach area you will find a few snack bars. At the other end of the coast you will find a good selection of fish tavernas near the small marina at Katelios. From the village take the road leading out towards Argosotli and a whole new selection of bars and tavernas is on offer.

Situated alongside the fish tavernas near the Katelios harbour you will find the Ostria taverna right by the beach.
