The village takes its name originally from the tradition of making ceramics. It is also well known as the birthplace of three Vallianos brothers from a wealthy ship owning family engaged in trading and shipping of wheat from Russia in the 19th century who were philanthropists contributing to various public facilities.
The family name lives on not just in the local Keramies High School but the brothers made a bequeath for funding the construction of the National Library of Vallianiou in Athens.
The remains of the national benefactors' house are still to be found in the village.
