LOURDAS

When describing the resort of Lourdas, it is an area of steep hillside, which ends in a lovely beach of course pale sand. The resort of Lourdas can refer to any part of the region from the village of Vlachata, starting on the main Argostoli to Poros road and winding down through a rural landscape. This area is dotted with private and tourist accommodation, shops and tavernas to the main village of Lourdata with its natural spring, many restaurants, tavernas and kafeneions.

Lourdas Bay is one of the largest bays of Kefalonia and is fringed by over two miles of sand and pebble beach. It is a wonderful place for walkers and hikers. With the backdrop of the pine forest and cypress trees of Mount Ainos, this makes a wonderful walk through the local village and down to the beach for swimming, in the amazingly blue sea.

The few tavernas situated by the beach at Lourdas, offer locally caught fish and the vegetables are grown on their own plots of fertile land, alongside the beach.

The Escape Centre offers motor-boat hire and is centrally situated on Lourdas beach.

Starting from the long sandy beach of Lourdas this trip covers a quite remote stretch of Kefalonia's south coastline. Sandstone cliffs, numerous non accessible sandy beaches and rock gardens are along the way.

After visiting a complex of sea caves, you will arrive at the beautiful beach of Koroni. Fine sand and crystal clear waters make Koroni an ideal stop for swimming and lunch. The trip finishes in the little fishing village of Katelios. Transfer is provided back to the starting point.

There is a good selection of supermarkets in the Lourdas area as well as souvenir shops.

The Garbis jewellery shop is a famous landmark at the crossroads between Lourdas, the beach and Trapezaki.

Klimatis taverna is centrally situated and offers home cooked food using the vegetables from their allotment alongside the beach. Next door they have a mini-market.

One of the first tavernas you find when you turn left onto Lourdas beach.

At the end of the road leading to Lourdas beach, if you turn right and keep walking you will come to the area of Lourdas bay known as Lithero.

The Lithero Taverna is on this beach serving fresh fish and it is open in the summer (telephone 26710 31023)

The Dionysos family taverna is in the centre of the village of Lourdas. Traditional local cooking and home made wine are on the menu. They also have a wood-burning oven and offer a take-away pizza service. For those staying in local accommodation - breakfast can be delivered to your room!

Spiros Taverna is on the road towards the beach at the crossroads for Trapezaki.
