The rural village of Mavrata is in the south of the island, 4km from the coastal village of Katelios with its sand and shingle beach. It is also 24km from the island's capital of Argostoli. A lesser known, but more local beach is at Koroni 2.5 km away.

From Katelios you may hire a small motor boat for exploring otherwise inaccessible beaches. Katelios is also famous for its fresh fish tavernas and if you like fishing, you can catch your own! This rural setting is a paradise for lovers of nature so if you enjoy walking, discovering rare plants and birds, then bring some comfortable shoes and follow the local footpaths. There is much of interest to explore locally - from the wine estate famous for its Robolla, the Sissia Monastery and church of the Virgin of the Snakes. The location of Katelios is hardly commercialized although large numbers of visiting caretta caretta turtles in the area, are of interest to the Katelios environmental group. The local bus service runs from Katelios to Skala and along the coastal road to Poros or in the other direction to Argostoli. Car hire recommended.
