The Lixouri peninsula has some dramatic coastline with a range of beaches. Due to its shape and the connection by ferry, it takes on the appearance of an island separate from the rest of Kefalonia. Beaches on the south of the peninsula tend to be rich red in colour, due to the soft red clay rocks. In the north there are the scenic bays of Petani and Atheras which retain their natural and un-commercialised scenic beauty.
Beaches along the south east coast tend to be pebbly and from Sami down to Poros the coastline offers mostly beaches which are inaccessible by road. Antisammos is probably the most famous in this area as it was one of the locations used when filming Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
The most famous blue flag in the area is Makris Yialos. The long beach of Makris Yialos offers water-sports. Platis (Wide Beach) beach is 200 metres by 20 to 50 metres wide and Makrys (Long Beach) is 750 metres long with similar width. The beaches are fringed with pines and cypresses. Discover the other beaches in Lassi - Palio Stafida, Gradakia, Kalamia and the coves in the Fanari area leading to Argostoli.
Skala is a famous Blue Flag beach with watersports. The south coast offers plenty more sand and sand and shingle beaches. The main beaches here are Mounda, Katelios, Lourdas, Trapezaki, St Thomas, Spartia, Avithos and Minies.
