Dating back to 1560 the beachside monastery was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake.
The monastery was built into the rock face

The cave has an ancient tradition and according to local folklore the water which drips from the walls of this cave can cure eye infections.

After the earthquake, some of the monastery was salvaged and preserved and a new church was built by the old site, virtually on the red sand beach of Lepeda which is a couple of kms outside Lixouri town.
