The Kastro

After the monastery it is a few minutes' away from the crossroad which takes you up to the Castle of Saint George. The Foivos Winery is in Vouni village on the Pali Peninsula and is open from April to October, Monday to Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and for one hour in the evenings from 7 to 8 p.m.

Back to Top of Sunrise Inn Hotel Koundourata Village PageSunrise Trail Itinerary 5

Drive 12 kms to Argostoli's ferry port for Lixouri where the ferries depart, usually every hour on the half hour in the summer season. The journey takes about 20 minutes to Lixouri town.

Lixouri

Lixouri is the second largest town on Kefalonia and is more laid back than Argostoli. There are shops, cafes and restaurants here so it is worth making this a 'comfort stop'!

Vouni

Travelling south west for about 5 kms, following the signposts to Xi beach and passing through the village of Soulari, through the village of Manzavinata which is famous for its Manzovino winery, and after the crossroad for Xi beach, you will arrive at Vouni village and the Foivos Winery.

Sandy Beaches

After the winery, you can double-back along the road and choose one of the sandy beaches at Xi with water-sports or at Meggas Lakos, both of which have red sandy beaches.

Vatsa Bay

For a less commercialised beach and a delightful place for lunch, it is worth continuing along the road after Vouni and possibly getting slightly lost in the myriad of lanes on the way to Vatsa Bay. Here there is a small sandy beach and a fish taverna with fishing boats moored in the fisherman's jetty nearby. The local fishermen supply the taverna straight from their catch.

Pali Peninsula

If you like exploring by car, after Vouni it is about 20 mins drive to the Kipouia monastery on the west coast of the peninsula. Pali peninsula is home to some traditional Greek villages which are very pretty like Kaminarata which is the next vilage from Kipouia. After Kaminarata there are some more pretty villages with the famous beach of Petani on the north west coast. Here the beach is pebbly and there are two beachside tavernas which make a good alternative lunch stop.

Return by road

If you prefer not to return using the Ferry which departs usually every hour on the hour from Lixouri port, you can cross the peninsula from Pentani and drive around the Argostoli gulf following the signposts for Argostoli. Alternatively from Petani, driving down the east coast of the peninsula gives lovely views across the bay with the road coming into Lixouri having completed a full circle of the Pali peninsula.
