Christmas in Corfu

Back to Top of Page
You may have wondered how we 'foreigners' celebrate Christmas in Corfu. Many British and other foreign national ex-pats go 'home' for Christmas but for those of us who stay here in Corfu one of the highlights is getting together to sing traditional Christmas carols.
Nativity Play
At Holy Trinity Church our celebrations kicked off with the childrens' Nativity Play. This year Jackie Dallos from Lefkada had written an adaptation of 'The Little Drummer Boy' which the Sunday School children acted out for us. They even got the congregation to sing one of the songs in two parts, with no previous practice! For the children we also have a Christingle Service with candle procession round the streets close to HTC, symbolising taking the light of Christ out into the World.
Nine Lessons and Carols
That same evening we held our traditional service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The church was packed and each lesson was read both in English and one other language including, Albanian, German, Spanish, Irish Gaelic and Welsh, as well as Greek. Afterwards we all retired to the Library for mulled wine and mince pies.
Carol Singing round Corfu Town
It has become quite a tradition that on the Thursday evening before Christmas a group of Carolers takes to the streets of Corfu singing carols and collecting money for a local charity. When we first started this we got some very strange looks from the locals but now we've become quite a feature and last year when the weather prevented the outing we were sorely missed! Again, mulled wine and mince pies are a good incentive!
Midnight Mass
As in good old Blighty many of us attend the Midnight Mass which celebrates the beginning of Christmas Day.

Corfu Message Forum

Back to Top of Page
Internet forums are an extremely popular and inexpensive way for communities to stay in touch. Whether you run a gaming clan, or a business, almost everyone has a forum on their website these days. Forums are both simple to use and convenient and a great way to stay in contact. If you have ever posted to a forum before, you will know how to post to any other forum out there.
Take for example the Corfu and Kefalonia Travel Guide Forums. We use our forums to provide site announcements, get feedback and offer advice.
Structure
Forums can be split into convenient topics. For example the GearHost forums are split into information, general, and support sections. Under these sections are additional forums which are news, email, support, etc. Within the forums you find all the topics, either posted by users or posted by GearHost support.
This makes it easy for users to get to the information they need quickly. For example, I was experimenting with a web portal application called Mambo. I found that their latest version had some issues with our web servers. I posted to the forum how to set it up and fix the issue. I know not every customer of GearHost wants to know this, or even know what Mambo is, but if they had a question they could find the answer there.
Besides being able to post questions and concerns, users are also able to message each other through private forum postings, called private messaging.
Forums also have several ways to administer and moderate. You can have multiple admin accounts and multiple moderators to help keep things under control. Moderators watch over topics and make sure that the threads (posts) stay in line with the topic subject. You can choose to have an un-moderated forum, or moderated. Meaning that each post must be approved before it is allowed to be posted. Administrators can create topics, remove topics, create new forums groups, etc, and of course moderate the forum also.
Another great feature forums provide is the ability to be notified of a reply to your post via email. Instead of checking back every day to see if someone replied, you can choose to subscribe to that topic and be notified via email when someone replies to your post. You can even subscribe to the whole forum which will notify you when anyone posts a new topic.
I'd like to encourage everyone to take a look at the GearHost forums, especially if you have a question or concern. It is a great way to get a hold of all the staff at GearHost and even some our clients. Even if you have a specific questions about coding it's likely one of our customers has come across the same problem and the answer could be in the forum.
If you want to post a topic you will need to register, it's free and only takes a few minutes. http://forums.gearhost.com
